Student Support Worker for Workshop and Lab Assistance

Job Description

This role is to provide Workshop and Lab Assistance and Notetaking support for a student with a visual impairment. To ensure widening participation and access, academic progress, and student retention in compliance with the Equality Act and the mission of Student Services. This position will be 12 hours per week and paying £13.67 per hour plus holiday pay.



 



Main responsibilities:




  • To produce accurate, unbiased, comprehensive, and legible handwritten or typed records of the content of lectures, seminars, discussions, off-campus events and other taught sessions in the student’s preferred style and format.

  • To make notes that contain pertinent information from the session. This may include: any questions and discussions that take place, diagrams, and references to any hand-outs.

  • To provide these notes in the agreed format within a specified timeframe.

  • To help students search library catalogues, locate materials, collect materials, photocopying etc.

  • To read directly to the student and/or onto audio tape or other recording media for a student whose disability makes reading or other forms of accessing text impossible.

  • To support a student in gaining access to the practical aspects of their course, e.g. in the laboratory or in a workshop/studio situation.

  • To assist students by providing typed transcription of audio or video recordings.

  • To provide social support to ensure students can access the wider aspects of student life.

  • To liaise directly with the student being supported to arrange locations/times etc. and to hold regular reviews with the student to assess how well the support is working.

  • To record the hours, you have worked and submit accurate timesheets.

  • To work in accordance with the Code of Practice for support workers.

  • To work in accordance with Health and Safety Legislation.

  • To be conversant with fire and emergency procedures.



 



Qualifications

To be educated to at least second year degree level in a relevant course.



Skills

Experience: To have experience of undergraduate study, to have experience of working with disabled people and experience working in a lab, either professionally or at a university level.



Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Clear and legible handwriting. Ability to type quickly with accurate spelling and grammar skills. Experience or an understanding of providing support for disabled adults. Good working knowledge of the laboratory and workshops. Desirable to have a familiarity with the subject, specific vocabulary, and technical language (Student is undertaking a 2nd year Biomedical Engineering undergraduate course). Thorough knowledge of the Queen Mary campus and awareness of disability issues.



Attitude and Disposition: Outgoing; good communication skills. Must be able to work calmly under pressure. Must be able to organise and manage fluctuating workloads. Must be willing to undertake training in note-taking and other relevant training sessions, as arranged by the Disability and Dyslexia Service.



 



Availability:



Lectures and IT classes:



Mondays 9am – 12pm, 2pm – 4pm



Thursday 11am – 1pm, 5pm – 6pm



Friday 9am – 10am, 2pm – 4pm, 5pm – 6pm



 



Labs:



Tuesdays 11am – 12pm commencing 27th Feb



Wednesdays 11am – 1pm commencing 27th March



Other: Able to work after 5pm occasionally, to work across different sites, i.e., Queen Mary campuses.

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is seeking a conscientious, reliable, friendly, and practical general assistant to support the friendly Student Experience Team during the busy enrolment and Welcome period.



They will be involved in running our student help desks, planning and assisting with welcome events, administrative tasks, plus any other tasks to support the Faculty Education Team as required. 



This will be an in-person position hence you would need to be on campus daily at Strand and Virginia Woolf buildings.

  • Design, develop and deliver modules for distance/blended learning provision.

  • Develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material to create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students.

  • Ensure that course design and delivery comply with the quality standards and regulations of the Department, School and College.

  • Responsible for dealing with referred issues for students within own educational programmes.

  • Provide first line support for colleagues, referring them to sources of further help if required.

Job Description: Research Assistant (participatory toolkit: engaging with young communities)



 



The aim is to produce a toolkit designed to help researchers and practitioners to employ participatory methods when working with young people. The research assistant will also be working alongside researchers and stakeholders to understand ‘youth voice,’ youth social action and solutions to issues facing young Londoners.



 



The toolkit will draw on our experiences of participatory research with and for young people; especially, the process of involving young people as peer researchers (16- to 25-year-olds) within our existing ‘Youth Social Action’ project commissioned by the Greater London Authority. In addition to analyse the findings, the young steering group members challenge us methodologically and epistemologically, and have thus developed innovative approaches and methods that not only will enhance the research, but also make the ‘Youth Social Action’ project more meaningful, empowering and engaging to the young people involved.



The project consists of two components: (1) research with Key Stage 3 students (12- to 14-year-olds) where the key part of the qualitative data is collected through school workshops; and, (2) research with 16- to 25-year-olds, where the data is collected through interactive activities, as part of the ‘Young Changemakers’ event, scheduled to take place on 12 July 2024 at London Metropolitan University.



Qualifications

This is a great opportunity for a graduate student or PGR student who want to further develop skills around academic research (qualitative), writing and delivering of school workshops.

To support this project, we need two research assistants to support us with the following tasks:



Conduct desk-based research




  • Help capture the youth participatory approach applied on the project.

  • Undertake literature searches as appropriate, and a literature review around participatory research involving young people.

  • Assist in the analysis of qualitative data, as directed by the research leads.

  • Summarise the key findings of the activities.



Presentation of findings




  • Assist with the presentation of findings.

  • Participate in the documentation of the results arising from research activity.

  • Contribute towards the publication of the toolkit.



Planning and managing resources




  • Work to deadlines and manage competing priorities, with direction as appropriate from project leads.



University/school profile




  • As appropriate, liaise with relevant internal and external contacts/organisations in related areas of study.



Delivery of project




  • Assist with planning and delivery of an event, taking place at London Metropolitan University, where the aim is to run fun, interactive research activities for 16- to 25-year-olds.

  • Assist with planning and delivery of two workshops for Key Stage 2 students, scheduled to take place in a school in Camden, London, on 15 and 16 July, 2024.
