We are urgently looking for a Student Support Worker to provide support to a disabled student who is a wheelchair user, who requires notes to be taken on their behalf. To provide practical and mobility support to assist this student in manoeuvring around the campus. To ensure widening participation and access, academic progress, and student retention in compliance with the Equality Act and the mission of Student Services.



Main responsibilities:




  • To produce accurate, unbiased, comprehensive, and legible handwritten or typed records of the content of lectures, seminars, discussions, off-campus events and other taught sessions in the student’s preferred style and format.

  • To make notes that contain pertinent information from the session. This may include: any questions and discussions that take place, diagrams and references to any hand-outs.

  • To provide these notes in the agreed format within a specified timeframe.

  • To assist students who experience difficulties with using facilities at the university because of physical or mobility difficulties; providing assistance for those students with mobility difficulties so they can access all areas of the campus.

  • To help manipulate a wheelchair, carrying books, IT equipment, typing, turning pages of books etc. as necessary.

  • To provide social support to ensure students can access the wider aspects of student life.

  • To liaise directly with the student being supported in order to arrange locations/times etc. and to hold regular reviews with the student to assess how well the support is working.

  • To record the hours, you have worked and submit accurate timesheets.

  • To work in accordance with the Code of Practice for support workers.

  • To work in accordance with Health and Safety Legislation.

  • To be conversant with fire and emergency procedures.



Qualifications

Educated to an A Level or equivalent standard. Desirable to be educated to at least second year degree level.



Skills

Experience: Desirable to have experience of undergraduate study, to have experience of working with disabled people.



Knowledge, skills, and abilities:




  • Clear and legible handwriting.

  • Ability to type quickly with accurate spelling and grammar skills.

  • Experience or an understanding of providing support for disabled adults.

  • Desirable to have a familiarity with the subject, specific vocabulary, and technical language (Student is undertaking a master’s degree in Drama).

  • Thorough knowledge of the Queen Mary campus and awareness of disability issues.



Attitude and Disposition: Outgoing; good communication skills. Must be able to work calmly under pressure. Must be able to organise and manage fluctuating workloads. Must be willing to undertake training in note-taking and other relevant training sessions, as arranged by the Disability and Dyslexia Service.



Other: Able to work after 5pm occasionally, to work across different sites, i.e., Queen Mary campuses and the student’s home.

The National Youth Theatre (NYT), in collaboration with National Youth Arts Wales (NYAW) and Gig Buddies, has secured National Lottery Funding to run its Local Inclusivity Networks (LINs) program, which aims to promote collaboration between disabled and non-disabled communities, reduce isolation, and establish grassroots inclusivity networks in England and in Wales. To support this program, the NYT has partnered with the Centre for Applied Research on Empowering Societies (CARES) to conduct research and evaluation in relation to the programme’s intended outcomes.   



Lead by an interdisciplinary team (CARES + London Met Lab), this new project aims to:   





  • Develop a framework for the programme impact evaluation based on the NYT’s emergent Theory of Change;   




  • Collect baseline evaluation data (including young disabled people engagement with local cultural offer), and map out local policy and cultural offer infrastructure);  




  • Co-design (for and with young disabled people) standards around inclusive cultural offers considering their lived experiences and those of their trusted support (parents, teachers, volunteer buddies) in navigating and accessing cultural offer outside educational settings;  




  • Identify determinants of effective local collaborative partnerships supporting and amplifying the voices of young disabled people and influencing policy locally.  





To support this project, we need a research assistant (quantitative) to help with the following tasks: 





  • Conduct quantitative (desk-based) research. The outputs of this task will be:  




  • Output 1: youth disability data national and local trends  




  • Output 2: Data dashboard to show young disabled people engagement with local cultural offer 





For this you will need to: 





  • Utilise and deploy quantitative research techniques under the supervision of the Lead Quantitative Research in the project. 




  • Identify data sources of youth disability data from UK data archives, London data store, and NHS Digital etc. 




  • Assist in the analysis and visualisation of quantitative data, as directed.  




  • Presentation of findings – (Additional outputs: Presentation, Zotero references library) 




  • Assist with the presentation of findings and data visualisation.  




  • Participate in the documentation of the results arising from research activity.  




  • Contribute towards the publication of research findings in suitable publications.  







  • Planning and managing resources  




  • Work to deadlines and manage competing priorities, with direction as appropriate from project leads.

This is a great opportunity for a graduate student or PGR student who want to further develop skills around academic research, with a particular emphasis on quantitative research, data analysis and visualisation. 



 



No teaching is required for this role. 



The position will be for remote working.
