Casual Position: Marketing & Events Assistant

Reports to
Employer Liaison & Events Manager/relevant Careers Consultant, King's College London Careers & Employability
1. To promote King's Careers & Employability facilities, services and events as widely as possible within King's.
2. To assist in the delivery of Careers events programme throughout the year
Objectives/specific tasks
This is not an exhaustive list. Other reasonable tasks will be delegated by the ELE Manager/Careers Consultant
- Act as an ambassador with students and academic departmental staff for specific schools
- Assist staff posting information and advice on social media and monitoring client engagement with social media
- Market events through various channels
- Assist staff distributing posters and flyers at specific campus(es)
- Work autonomously to host evening employer events on campus (events usually finish 20.00-21.00)
- Be responsible for meeting employers on campus for evening presentations
- Take notes from employer presentations to submit a brief report to Careers & Employability
- Collect feedback and survey results and enter onto careers information management system
- Work at the Careers Fairs
- With permissions from academic staff, make announcements at lectures about forthcoming careers events and services
- Attend open days, post-offer days, fresher's fairs, careers road shows, etc. to inform current and prospective students about Careers & employability
- Canvas student views on King's Careers & Employability and the services it offers, including facilitating focus groups

- Positive and friendly approach to their work, with clear customer focus

- Ability to organise own workload to agreed targets, prioritise tasks and keep to deadlines

- The willingness to work in the evenings (normally until 21.00).

Job Context 

The Festival of Communities is an annual event organised by Queen Mary in collaboration and partnership with local community organisations in Tower Hamlets. The festival is designed to celebrate living and learning in Tower Hamlets, and bring local residents together with staff and students at Queen Mary. It features interactive, hands-on activities linked to research taking place across the university, community activities and stalls, and family friendly activities such as face painting. Job Purpose 

The Festival of Communities PhD Crew members will work with the Centre for Public Engagement team (CPE), to support the delivery of the Festival of Communities taking place on the 8th June 2024. The Festival operations are run each year by the CPE along with a local event production company. This role will support the CPE team in delivering the Festival, taking on an operational role during the event. 


Key dates candidates must be available for:  

  • Briefing session (in person on ME campus) - Wednesday 5th June, 2-4.30pm (2.5hrs) 

  • Festival – Saturday 8th June, 9-6pm 

Preference will be given to those who are available for the briefing and full Festival day.  

A Festival t-shirt and lunch will be provided for the Festival day.  


Main Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Meeting and greeting visitors to the Festival locations. 

  • Responding to questions from exhibitors and local residents, ensuring a positive experience for all during the Festival of Communities (8th June). 

  • Work as part of the Festival of Communities delivery team, ensuring exhibitors and visitors are supported and using initiative to solve problems as they arise. 

  • Assisting with the set up and pack down of the Festival in Stepney Green Park. 

  • Leading on implementing various evaluation methods during the Festival. This includes talking to activity participants and visitors about their festival experience, running evaluation activities and encouraging young people to complete stamp trails. 

  • Representing Queen Mary University of London. 

  • Undertake other duties to support the Festival of Communities within the scope of this role, as determined by the Community Engagement Manager and Public Engagement Officer.

Job purpose

The Beyond 1932 ERC/UKRI project under the lead of Professor Martin Stokes and the curatorial direction of Dr Rim Irscheid for the project’s artist residencies is looking for a student with experience in filming and recording live events and sufficient experience in social media engagement. The Beyond 1932 project is based at King’s Music Department, looking at the sonic legacy of Cairo’s 1932 Congress and contemporary artists’ engagement with archives, music pedagogy and other aspects of musical and knowledge production in the Middle East and North Africa.

As part of the Artist Residency Series that will take place across Café OTO (Hackney) and the British Library, the successful candidate will be equipped with a video camera and record parts of the event for archival and social media purposes.

The tasks involve the following:

  1. Attending the events on 2 days in May (11 May, other day tbc) to film sound installation and talk using equipment provided by the research team. Each event will last approx. 6 hours)

  2. Filming the sound check and live event

  3. Given full control over the projects Instagram account in this period, the student will upload stories on the Beyond 1932 social media and create 1-2 posts about the events. This includes selecting pictures and writing captions for the post.

  4. Liaising with the AV team on site (Cafe OTO/BL) to arrange for external sound recorder to be connected to main A/V system.

Payment is 13.92 per hour and timesheets will be submitted via King’s Talent Bank. Registration to King’s Talent bank is necessary to apply for this role.


Undergoing BA at King's. 


Experience in filming and recording live events.
