Job Description

  • Participation in appropriate training - including mandatory courses/sessions and/or induction sessions.
  • Delivery of agreed package of teaching activities to a high standard, under the direct supervision of a member of academic staff. These activities may include seminars, classes, tutorials, lab sessions, other small group work to develop student skills, and/or mentoring support for UG or PGT project work. GTAs will not normally be involved in lecturing, but in some cases may be asked to lead lectures if the topic falls within their specialist field. GTAs will need to meet regularly with the convenor of the module.
  • Careful and proportionate preparation for teaching activities. In some instances, materials will be provided by departments/ faculties.
  • Marking and assessment (formative and summative) under supervision of module convenors or other appropriate academic staff.
  • Provision of timely and useful formative and summative feedback to students, holding weekly office hours or similar to provide students with opportunities for face-to-face meetings, and providing feedback and guidance via e-mail where needed.
  • Maintenance of information and resources on KEATS and interaction with students via the VLE.
  • Routine administration and correspondence associated with teaching delivery.

GTAs will not be expected to:

  • Lead lectures, unless they have accepted to do so on a very occasional basis, in their specialist field.
  • Provide pastoral support to students or act as a personal tutor.
  • Be involved in Open Days or admissions activities.
  • Provide students with references.
  • Set assessments.
  • Be available to students at all times.
  • Carry out unremunerated additional work on an ad hoc basis.
  • Variation will exist across academic departments and disciplines in relation to specific requirements of GTAs. Roles and responsibilities may also be subject to change.

Contract Type

This post will be offered via a working plan arranged through Kings Teachers:

       Semester 1:  22 weeks, if marking 1st Sept - 31st Jan
       Semester 1:  15 weeks, if not marking 1st Sept - 12th Dec


Qualifications
  • A first degree in a relevant subject area (or have equivalent experience).       
  • Currently studying towards a PhD in a relevant subject area (or have equivalent experience).

  • Ability to provide advice to students on study skills and assist with any learning problems.

To be a model for Year 2 and 3 MBBS students to perform transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE), pleural ultrasound and abdominal ultrasound. The session is supervised by healthcare professionals trained in ultrasound who will act as facilitators and tutors instructing on ultrasound technique. You will be required to lie on a couch for up to 2 hours with the torso and abdomen exposed so the students can practice performing ultrasound on your chest wall or abdomen. This task involves application of ultrasound gel to an ultrasound probe that will be positioned at key landmarks on your chest and abdomen to visualise the heart, lung and abdominal structures. The facilitator will demonstrate how to obtain images of your heart/lung/abdominal organs using surface landmarks on your torso and abdominal walls before allowing the students to operate the probe and practice obtaining the same images. Your two hour session consists of 4 shorter rotations of 30 minutes each with approximately 10 students per rotation.

This event takes place on Thursday 10th July and you are required from 3:30pm-5:30pm at Guy's Campus, Shepherd's House, Chantler Centre.



Qualifications

You are required to lie on a couch for 2 hours with short breaks. The couch will have the head supported and a gown/blanket available. The torso must be exposed to allow the ultrasound of your heart, lungs and abdomen.

To be a model for Year 2 MBBS students to perform a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG). You will be required to lie on a couch for up to 2 hours (inclusive of breaks) with the torso exposed so the students can practice performing an electrocardiogram. This task involves placing adhesives and electrodes on the surface of the exposed chest wall to obtain a tracing of your heart's electrical activity. The students will operate the machine to obtain the ECG and interpret the findings. Each session is divided into two 45 minute segments with about 15 students per session. The students will rotate during the session to enable them all to operate the ECG machine and practice placing the electrodes on the chest wall at the correct positions. The session is facilitated by a medical education fellow.
