Research Assistant - Authoritarian Conflict Management

Job Description

  • Perform intense desktop research on ?authoritarian conflict management? within International Relations and IPE theory especially in relation to Africa. 
  • NOTE - work needs to begin ASAP. Selected candidate will need to meet before 23rd May for quick verbal explanation; and then delivery final work within 2 weeks of that (by 9th June). 
  • Read and gather all relevant information and data related to the above topic. 
  • Establish literature availability as well as collate and examine relevant literature sources to produce :
    • A ?data dump? of relevant material
    • A literature review document across the research topic, 1500-2000 words.
  • Compile bibliography (with abstracts or summary) of any and all sources consulted throughout the research.

You would support the 3-day international conference The Lifespan, which is the annual meeting of the European Society for Literature, Science and the Arts. You would provide on-the-day assistance in relation to IT support, in particular the running of break-out panels that are conducted as hybrid sessions; in addition you will be available on the day throughout the three days to support IT in relation to presentation setup (the use of Powerpoint) available to support three other students as and when IT queries arise. The role covers 9 hours per day during the conference period (4 to 6 June 2025), plus 2 hours on Thursday evening during the reception, plus a total of 4 hours for pre-meetings and induction. As the vast majority of these working hours are concentrated in the week of the conference, current students and applicants currently in the UK on a visa must ensure there are no restrictions that would prohibit them from doing this work.

The Department of Political Economy, KCL, is seeking to appoint Research Assistants to work part-time time on the research project ADVODID with Prof. Anne Rasmussen. The Advocacy in Digital Democracy (ADVODID) project is funded by an European Research Council Consolidator Grant. It seeks to implement the first large-scale project designed to provide evidence on the effects of advocacy on citizens and policymakers in both online and offline settings.  Help support research on the three work packages of the research project, which currently includes the administration of surveys to assist the Principal Investigator and Post-Docs working on the project. Applications will be considered from MA/MSc and PhD students.

In the process of completing or have completed a MSc/MA in political science or related discipline.

Essential criteria 

1. Current MA or PhD student in Political Science, Communication Science, Data Science, Economics, Sociology, or a closely related discipline. 

2. Solid expertise in research methods, including experience with coding and data management in common statistical programming languages (e.g. Stata, R, and/or Python). 

3. Strong English language skills 

 

Desirable criteria 

4. A good grasp of relevant academic literature (e.g. theory and research on (inequality in) political representation, social media, digital democracy and/or interest groups). 

5. Demonstrated capacity for producing excellent papers published, or capable of being published, with academic journals and presses. 

6. Experience with developing and applying quasi-experimental and experimental research designs. 

7. Working knowledge of one or more of the following languages Spanish, Dutch, Danish and German.
