Job Description

The Research Assistant will support the work of the Preventable Deaths Tracker (https://preventabledeathstracker.net/), an online platform that systematically collects and analyses information from medico-legal death investigations. 

The Preventable Deaths Tracker (PDT) is a relational database run on WordPress that automatically inputs coroners? Prevention of Future Deaths reports (PFDs) published in England and Wales since 2013. There are 5,681 reports published as of 22 May 2025 that are included in the database, which updates every day. The database is also being expanded to include data from Scotland.

The core mission of the PDT is to save lives by enabling learning from avoidable and premature deaths. The PDT?s areas of focus are: 

  1. Surveillance: Developing methods for identifying and monitoring safety signals and trends from coroners' reports and organisational responses.
  2. Tools: Creating a system for the dissemination of real-time analytics, statistics, and lessons from avoidable deaths. 
  3. Practice and policy: Use discoveries and research findings to inform the practice of death investigations, reviews, and policies for death prevention. 

The primary role of the Research Assistant is to review legacy reports (i.e. since 2013), extract key variables such as age and date of death, and tag and categorise deaths to create a taxonomy for understanding the types of deaths reported by coroners. The primary responsibilities include: 

  • Data entry of variables (e.g. demographics) not automatically extracted by the database tools, tagging and categorisation of reports 
  • Data cleaning and database management
  • Website management, including reviewing content, posting and keeping content up to date
  • Training other users of the database, including verbal training sessions, writing manuals and creating video content 
  • Prepare bespoke analyses of the data
  • Assist with administrative tasks


Qualifications

Undergraduate qualification in relevant topic area, with good qualification (e.g. 2.1) or evidence of equivalent relevant experience and/or training.



Skills
  1. Evidence of relevant data entry and/or database management experience
  2. Evidence of relevant website experience, including use of WordPress or similar platforms.
  3. Evidence of relevant quantitative or mixed methods research experience, including the analysis of data using software 
  4. High computer literacy with advanced Word, Excel, and statistical software skills.
  5. Ability to work independently while maintaining deadlines and completing tasks with a high attention to detail and careful record keeping 
  6. Knowledge of the death investigation system in the UK and/or abroad, including inquests
  7. Knowledge of morbidity and mortality classification systems, including ICD-codes

You would support the 3-day international conference The Lifespan, which is the annual meeting of the European Society for Literature, Science and the Arts. You would provide on-the-day assistance in relation to IT support, in particular the running of break-out panels that are conducted as hybrid sessions; in addition you will be available on the day throughout the three days to support IT in relation to presentation setup (the use of Powerpoint) available to support three other students as and when IT queries arise. The role covers 9 hours per day during the conference period (4 to 6 June 2025), plus 2 hours on Thursday evening during the reception, plus a total of 4 hours for pre-meetings and induction. As the vast majority of these working hours are concentrated in the week of the conference, current students and applicants currently in the UK on a visa must ensure there are no restrictions that would prohibit them from doing this work.

Proficiency in using computer systems, databases, and standard office software.

Ability to learn quickly and follow procedures accurately in a fast-paced environment.

Confidence using databases and standard software applications.

Knowledge of university admissions or clearing processes is desirable but not essential.
