Responsibilities

- Delivery of agreed package of teaching activities to a high standard, under the direct supervision of a member of academic staff. These activities may include seminars, classes, tutorials, lab sessions, other small group work to develop student skills, demonstration for experiments/techniques in lab-based science and computing, and/or mentoring support for UG or PGT project work. Students will not normally be involved in lecturing, but in some cases may be asked to lead lectures if the topic falls within their specialist field.

- Participation in appropriate training including mandatory courses/sessions (e.g., courses, induction sessions.)

- Careful and proportionate preparation for teaching activities. In some instances, materials will be provided by departments/ faculties.

- Marking and assessment (formative and summative) under supervision of module leaders or other appropriate academic staff.

- Provision of timely and useful formative and summative feedback to students, holding weekly office hours or similar to provide students with opportunities for face-to-face meetings, and providing feedback and guidance via e-mail where needed.

- Maintenance of information and resources on KEATS and interaction with students via the VLE.

- Attendance at lectures where needed/requested to ensure consistency of module delivery.

- Routine administration and correspondence associated with teaching delivery.

- Liaison with senior colleagues regarding contributions to module development (e.g. course material, content development), planning of teaching and monitoring student progress.

Variation will exist across academic departments and disciplines in relation to specific requirements of GTAs. Roles and responsibilities may also be subject to change.  If you are required to complete additional marking, these hours will be added to your assignment and your hours and contract length will be changed accordingly with your agreement after you have started.

 

GTAs will not be expected to:

- Lead lectures, unless they have accepted to do so on a very occasional basis, in their specialist field

- Provide pastoral support to students or act as a personal tutor

- Be involved in Open Days or admissions activities - Provide students with references

- Set assessments

- Be available to students at all times

- Carry out unremunerated additional work on an ad hoc basis Mandatory training All mandatory training (specific to the delivery of teaching, rather than generic training which all PhD students should already be undertaking as part of their studies) will be remunerated. Under the new model, all GTAs will receive 6 hours of remunerated training for every academic year in which they teach at King's, regardless of whether they have taught before or not. It is envisaged that this would constitute 6 hours of jointly delivered training with King's Academy and academic departments. Some faculties may decide that they wish to include more mandatory training and to pay their GTAs for this. It is also up to departments and faculties to work with King's Academy to decide what constitutes mandatory training, which element of this can be delivered online, and what constitutes professional development training for all PGRs. To be a model for Year 2 MBBS students to perform a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG). You will be required to lie on a couch for up to 2 hours (inclusive of breaks) with the torso exposed so the students can practice performing an electrocardiogram. This task involves placing adhesives and electrodes on the surface of the exposed chest wall to obtain a tracing of your heart's electrical activity. The students will operate the machine to obtain the ECG and interpret the findings. Each session is divided into two 45 minute segments with about 15 students per session. The students will rotate during the session to enable them all to operate the ECG machine and practice placing the electrodes on the chest wall at the correct positions. The session is facilitated by a medical education fellow.

Who we are Situated within IT Services, the Technology Enhanced Learning Team (TELT) provides strategic oversight of e-learning at QM and works to promote, support, and develop technology-enhanced learning across the institution. 

It is responsible for institution-wide learning applications such as: 

  1. QMplus, the online learning environment (based on Moodle and Mahara)
  2. Q-Review lecture capture (based on Echo360)
  3. Turnitin, to assist with similarity detection

Main duties: 

We are seeking 8 enthusiastic, confident, and tech-savvy students to join our team as part-time TEL (Technology Enhanced Learning) Student Ambassadors, to work with members of the TEL Team delivering engaging and informative TELT student inductions during Welcome Week, September 2025. 

In 2023 TELT worked with 3 TEL Student Ambassadors to update and develop the TEL student induction programme, based on feedback gathered from students. Over the last two years, our new student led inductions have been well received, and we intend to deliver a similar programme for September 2025. 

As a TEL Student Ambassador, you will play a vital role in promoting the effective use of learning technologies to enhance the educational experience of our students. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Promoting our sessions across campus during Welcome Week.
  • Engage new students with our technologies by sharing individual experiences during face-to-face Welcome Week inductions.
  • Working in pairs, confidently deliver student inductions during the Welcome Week. This includes presenting information, providing demonstrations, and addressing any queries or concerns raised by students.
  • Actively promote the benefits and features of learning applications supported by the TELT, emphasising how these technologies can enhance the learning experience.

We are seeking a reliable and proactive Autoclave Technician / Laboratory Support Assistant to provide essential support to our laboratory operations. This role involves managing autoclave processes, handling laboratory waste and glassware, maintaining lab cleanliness, and supporting general lab logistics?including assistance with liquid nitrogen (LN₂) decanting. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, organized, and committed to maintaining a safe and efficient lab environment.

  • Operate and maintain autoclaves for sterilization of lab materials and waste.
  • Collect, clean, and return laboratory glassware and consumables.
  • Manage and dispose of laboratory waste in accordance with safety protocols.
  • Assist with liquid nitrogen (LN₂) decanting, ensuring safe handling and adherence to safety procedures.
  • Monitor and maintain lab support systems, including drain compressors and freezer defrosting.
  • Assist with stock management and delivery of consumables to lab areas.
  • Support lab staff with equipment movement and general tidying of lab spaces.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations at all times.
  • Liaise with lab coordinators and technicians to ensure smooth daily operations.


Qualifications

  • Experience working in a research or academic lab environment.
  • Knowledge of COSHH and waste disposal regulations.
  • Forklift or manual handling training (if applicable).
