Job Description

Job Purpose: To provide a technical support service to academic and research staff and students.

MAIN ACTIVITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    Perform and record receipt of specimens and goods (reagents, consumables, etc) into the laboratory in accordance with SOPs and policies. 
2.    Operate and carry out routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as directed.  Ensure general laboratory tidiness.
3.      Perform regular inventory of stock and monitoring levels of stocks/stores to ensure there is adequate stock at all times for the area.
4.    Maintain accurate records of results as required by UKAS and other regulatory bodies and in a manner that will enable them to be accessed and interpreted as required 
5.    Maintain sample tracking processes and records and contribute to shipments of samples and reagents as required.
6.    Undertake core laboratory tasks such as preparation of solutions, storage of reagents and chemicals and appropriate waste disposal duties.
7.    Comply with Health and Safety procedures affecting self and others.
8.    Carry out any other duties which are appropriate to the post as may be reasonably requested by Supervisor.
 



Qualifications

Academic and/or vocational qualifications i.e. a minimum of 5 GCSE?s A-C and/or NVQ level 2 in relevant subject (or equivalent)



Skills
  1. 1 year's relevant experience to include:
    At least 6 months working in a busy laboratory or laboratory prep area
    Previous experience in laboratory waste disposal and hazardous chemical handling/disposal.
    Experience of using/maintaining general laboratory equipment.
  2. Working knowledge of relevant systems, equipment and processes.
  3. Understanding of relevant regulations and procedures including Health and Safety requirements.
  4. IT skills
  5. Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  6. Ability to develop and demonstrate standard equipment and techniques
  7. Ability to prioritise duties within own work schedule, under management of senior colleagues
  8. Problem solving skills

This exciting position will allow the successful candidate to work on the Marie Curie Commissioned Research Project project ?Hospital and ambulance service use by people in the final year of life?. The successful candidate will be based within the QUB Cancer Epidemiology Group in the Centre for Public Health and will work collaboratively with partners in the Marie Curie charity and the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS). The specific objective of this post is to better understand the use of the ambulance, Accident & Emergency (A&E), and inpatient hospital stay services by patients in their last year of life. The findings will contribute to the development of wider research ideas aimed at providing an evidence base for improvements to home-based palliative care, often the preferred setting for patients.

The main objectives of the project are to: (1) estimate the volume, timing, type, outcomes, and proportion of ambulance calls for end-of-life (EOL) patients (2022?2024) using NIAS data; (2) estimate A&E and hospital use by EOL patients (2014?2023) using data provided and accessed through the Honest Broker Service (HBS, situated in the Business Services Organisation, BSO) which is a Trusted Research Environment for Health and Social Care (HSC) Northern Ireland; (3) calculate hospital bed days and inpatient costs in the last year of life. The position will contribute to a programme of work aimed at delivering on these objectives. 



Qualifications
  • A relevant primary degree (1st or 2:1 classification) related to the duties of the position such as epidemiology, social sciences, applied statistics, data science or public health-related area such as pharmacy or psychology, or

Optional or desirable qualifications for the job: 

 

 

  • Master?s degree in epidemiology, social sciences, applied statistics, data science or public health-related area, or
  • About to complete a PhD (expected submission within 3 months of advert) in epidemiology, social sciences, applied statistics, data science or public health-related area


Skills
  • Specific, relevant experience of research methods in biostatistics/epidemiology 
  • Experience in advanced statistical techniques, e.g. multivariable statistical analyses / Cox proportional hazards etc.
  • Knowledge and experience of relevant methodological approaches to analysis of large population-based datasets
  • Experience of using statistical packages such as STATA, SAS or R
  • Demonstrable proficiency in academic paper writing

The candidate will complete Finite Element Simulations of composite structures under impact loading. The candidate will also write and modify codes for material models which can interact with Abaqus to predict material failure. 



Qualifications

No specific qualifications. However, the candidate would preferably be in Stage 4/pre-graduation (and have studied Mechanics of Aerospace Materials and CAE) or Stage 3 in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.



Skills

Experience of using Abaqus for simulation is essential. Experience of writing code and an understanding of carbon fibre composite materials would be desirable but not essential.

Student Services and Systems 

Student Registry team are looking for student helpers, available to work 20 hours minimum, to assist with Summer Graduation 2025. 

Have you got good communication skills? Are you conscientious and able to work well in a team? Then there may be an opportunity for you to perform a very important role in supporting the University's Summer Graduation 2025. 

These posts are expected to be available from Tuesday 24 June to Friday 4 July (including Saturday 28 June), with training expected to take place Friday 20 June or Monday 23 June. You should ensure you have good availability from the period 20 June - 4 July 

Various duties to include 

  • assisting in preparation of graduation brochures/parchments, 
  • preparation of the graduation hall, 
  • assisting guests and graduands on the day, and other tasks as identified by Student Registry Leads

Working hours will be from 8am - 4pm, unless otherwise specified, during the graduation period. 

It is a requirement of this post that applicants are currently registered and attending a course at Queen's University Belfast for the academic year 2024/25 and for the full period this post is available, otherwise the application will not be considered.
