Job Description

We are looking for 6 exceptional students to join our Student Skills Development Team in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS). As part of a dedicated group of Student Assistants you will provide peer-to-peer support and training for Undergraduate and Postgraduate students to help develop and promote the student skills agenda. This is an exciting opportunity to lead, inspire, and innovate within a unique team designed ?for students by students: for academic, digital and career success?. These roles are a continuation of a growing initiative to transform the student learning experience through peer-led initiatives, creativity and community support. 

Your roles and responsibilities will include co-designing and delivering impactful learning experiences through workshops, 1-2-1s, drop ins, social media campaigns (with the support of a dedicated Marketing Coordinator to create engaging, relevant, and student-driven content designed to empower your fellow students to thrive academically, personally, and in their future professional careers.

The expectation is that this role will take approximately 10 hours per week but flexibility will be required to ensure the needs of the post can be met, as well as flexibility of hours worked being allowed to fit around your studies.

Our expectation is that interviews will take place W/C 23rd June 2025.

Leading on digital skills required for university, digital and AI literacies, and building real-world confidence in technology and software required to navigate learning and assessment, personal projects, and the digital skills required for the future workplace.

Developing key skills required for future career success, including communication, teamwork, adaptability, and networking. Empowering students to grow personally and professionally to be ready for their future career.

You will work with Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate Taught (PGT), and Postgraduate Research (PGR) communities, tailored to your strengths, preferences, and needs of the team with all training being provided. You will support the five schools in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences to design and deliver educationally aligned, career focused sessions in line with industry needs and employer feedback.

Currently enrolled (until at least July 2026) as a student at Queen?s University Belfast.

Essential Criteria

  1. Take the lead in designing engaging, relevant, and student-driven content and sessions which may include, but is not limited to, presentations, workshops, demonstrations, facilitation of external speakers and panel discussions, and asynchronous material.
  2. Work collaboratively with fellow Student Skills Assistants, university staff, and student voice representatives in compliance with the ?For Students, By Students? team ethos.
  3. Collaborate with partners across the Faculty, Schools, and industry to plan, organise, and deliver events for undergraduate and postgraduate students, ensuring these events are tailored to meet the needs of specific groups, such as international students, Widening Participation students, student societies, and Students? Union representatives.
  4. Plan and organise events at least three weeks in advance to allow the Marketing Coordinator and Team Manager sufficient time to review the content and promote the session effectively
  5. Provide email and 1-2-1 support to address student queries.
  6. Facilitate student feedback opportunities e.g. through focus groups or surveys and analyse outcomes to improve skill development activity.
  7. Gather standardised feedback from student participants to inform regular reports, add to the monthly Stakeholder Report and impact of team activities.
  8. Represent the student voice and contribute to working groups, committees, and meetings.
  9. Contribute to the creation of a ?best practice? guide for student-facing workshops for internal and external stakeholders.
  10. Identify and promote good practice in online, hybrid, and blended learning.
  11. Maintain high standards and ensure accessibility in all work.
  12. Foster effective teamwork through open communication.
  13. Collaborate with teams in your School (e.g. social media team) and the wider University to promote team activities and engage AHSS students in line with direction from Marketing Coordinator.
  14. Contribute to University led multi-media outputs (e.g. website content, written blogs, podcasts etc.) 
  15. Assist AHSS Digital Learning Team and Development Office with Faculty projects involving students and staff, attending and reporting back at regular team meetings. 
  16. Build relationships with key stakeholders across the University.
  17. Complete required training as necessary.
  18. Fulfil any other reasonable duties assigned by the supervisor and provide regular updates.

Desireable Criteria

  1. An interest in at least one of the following: 
    1. Industry and employability trends for AHSS students including placements, mentoring or career progression.
    2. Digital tools for creativity, problem solving or project management.
    3. Teaching or guiding others in skill development with a good understanding of andragogy.
  2. A good foundational knowledge and competency in the use of Generative AI and its implications and potential impact on education and future careers. 
  3. Demonstrable experience of public speaking or workshop delivery.
  4. Teaching or marking experience and ability to design asynchronous learning resources.
  5. Experience in using generative AI and an understanding of ethics of using AI in an educational.

The candidate will complete Finite Element Simulations of composite structures under impact loading. The candidate will also write and modify codes for material models which can interact with Abaqus to predict material failure. 



Qualifications

No specific qualifications. However, the candidate would preferably be in Stage 4/pre-graduation (and have studied Mechanics of Aerospace Materials and CAE) or Stage 3 in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.



Skills

Experience of using Abaqus for simulation is essential. Experience of writing code and an understanding of carbon fibre composite materials would be desirable but not essential.

Student Services and Systems 

Student Registry team are looking for student helpers, available to work 20 hours minimum, to assist with Summer Graduation 2025. 

Have you got good communication skills? Are you conscientious and able to work well in a team? Then there may be an opportunity for you to perform a very important role in supporting the University's Summer Graduation 2025. 

These posts are expected to be available from Tuesday 24 June to Friday 4 July (including Saturday 28 June), with training expected to take place Friday 20 June or Monday 23 June. You should ensure you have good availability from the period 20 June - 4 July 

Various duties to include 

  • assisting in preparation of graduation brochures/parchments, 
  • preparation of the graduation hall, 
  • assisting guests and graduands on the day, and other tasks as identified by Student Registry Leads

Working hours will be from 8am - 4pm, unless otherwise specified, during the graduation period. 

It is a requirement of this post that applicants are currently registered and attending a course at Queen's University Belfast for the academic year 2024/25 and for the full period this post is available, otherwise the application will not be considered.

Project title: White Fertility - pro-natalism and the gender politics of ageing in an era of populism.  

PI - Dr Gemma Carney

This 8-week, part-time RA position is for a research assistant to work with Dr. Gemma Carney to undertake desk research to underpin the development of a proposal for a Special Issue on Gender, Politics and the demographic transition ? anti-migrant and pro-natalist approaches to ageing populations in Asia, Europe and America. The Research Assistant will work independently to scope out this field which is interdisciplinary, extending out from social policy and ageing across to gender studies, and area studies. 

The RA will spend 6 hours per week for 8 weeks gathering research, reading and reviewing relevant literature and researching relevant organisations which work on the topic. They will organise a webinar with these organisations (e.g. Hope Not Hate) and also contact some research leaders in the field about their interest in contributing to the Special Issue. 

Applicants must be available to work over the summer period. They must also have a strong track record in academic research at UG/PG level with a specific interest in demographic change/Far Right politics/gender politics/sociology of emotion/social policy.
