Job Description

The School of Arts, English and Languages invites applications from students of French, Irish or Spanish at QUB to become Student Languages Mentors in schools in Northern Ireland. This position involves a total of 12.5 hours of work between September 2025 and January 2026, paid at a rate of ?15.95 per hour. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

 

We are currently seeking to recruit additional mentors who are students of IRISH.

 

Languages at Queen?s, in collaboration with NICILT, will be running a mentoring scheme between September 2025 and January 2026 for language learners in year 12 of secondary school. The aims of the scheme will be to support GCSE pupils in French, Irish or Spanish; to help them build oral skills; to support them with areas of language learning that they find challenging; to enthuse them about language learning; to build confidence such that those who might consider taking a language at A level feel empowered to make a positive decision. 

 

Student mentors will act as ?role models and ambassadors? to programme participants, providing pupils with an enthusiastic insight into life as a languages student at Queen?s, including the experience of studying/working abroad or in the Gaeltacht.     

 

The mentoring will be ?one-on-two? (one mentor to two pupils). Mentors will receive training, including in relation to the Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Groups Act. They will also give talks to cohorts of pupils in the school. Training and materials for mentoring and for the talks will be provided. The role will involve a total of around 12.5 hours of work between September 2025 and January 2026.

Applicants must consent to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure Access NI check, paid for by QUB.

 

Desirable Criteria:

Completion of a residence abroad or in the Gaeltacht as part of the degree. Applications from those entering their final year of study in 2025/26 are particularly welcome. 

Experience of working with young people (e.g. through engagement as a volunteer, as a language assistant or tutor, or as member of a social organisation). 

Other Criteria:

As the role will require applicants to work with young people under the Age of 18 an Access NI check will be required. Queen?s will organise and fund this. 

Applicants should be prepared to travel within NI.  expenses will be re-imbursed.

The candidate will complete Finite Element Simulations of composite structures under impact loading. The candidate will also write and modify codes for material models which can interact with Abaqus to predict material failure. 



Qualifications

No specific qualifications. However, the candidate would preferably be in Stage 4/pre-graduation (and have studied Mechanics of Aerospace Materials and CAE) or Stage 3 in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.



Skills

Experience of using Abaqus for simulation is essential. Experience of writing code and an understanding of carbon fibre composite materials would be desirable but not essential.

Student Services and Systems 

Student Registry team are looking for student helpers, available to work 20 hours minimum, to assist with Summer Graduation 2025. 

Have you got good communication skills? Are you conscientious and able to work well in a team? Then there may be an opportunity for you to perform a very important role in supporting the University's Summer Graduation 2025. 

These posts are expected to be available from Tuesday 24 June to Friday 4 July (including Saturday 28 June), with training expected to take place Friday 20 June or Monday 23 June. You should ensure you have good availability from the period 20 June - 4 July 

Various duties to include 

  • assisting in preparation of graduation brochures/parchments, 
  • preparation of the graduation hall, 
  • assisting guests and graduands on the day, and other tasks as identified by Student Registry Leads

Working hours will be from 8am - 4pm, unless otherwise specified, during the graduation period. 

It is a requirement of this post that applicants are currently registered and attending a course at Queen's University Belfast for the academic year 2024/25 and for the full period this post is available, otherwise the application will not be considered.

Project title: White Fertility - pro-natalism and the gender politics of ageing in an era of populism.  

PI - Dr Gemma Carney

This 8-week, part-time RA position is for a research assistant to work with Dr. Gemma Carney to undertake desk research to underpin the development of a proposal for a Special Issue on Gender, Politics and the demographic transition ? anti-migrant and pro-natalist approaches to ageing populations in Asia, Europe and America. The Research Assistant will work independently to scope out this field which is interdisciplinary, extending out from social policy and ageing across to gender studies, and area studies. 

The RA will spend 6 hours per week for 8 weeks gathering research, reading and reviewing relevant literature and researching relevant organisations which work on the topic. They will organise a webinar with these organisations (e.g. Hope Not Hate) and also contact some research leaders in the field about their interest in contributing to the Special Issue. 

Applicants must be available to work over the summer period. They must also have a strong track record in academic research at UG/PG level with a specific interest in demographic change/Far Right politics/gender politics/sociology of emotion/social policy.
