Job Description

This role is open to students studying at King?s College London. 

Research assistants will be managed by staff from the Department of Chemistry (Dr Helen Coulshed), Bioscience Education (Dr Mandeep Gill Sagoo and Dr Andrea Cockett), King?s Academy (Dr Martin Compton), and King?s Foundations (Jessica Cooper and Robin Yu).  

The research project aims to improve feedback engagement by students through the creation of 10 short, AI-generated, interactive videos, each 5-7 minutes long.  

 

Main duties and responsibilities: 

To work with staff and 2 other research associates to: 

  •  Review current literature on feedback literacy related to UK Higher Education. 
  • Co-create a storyboard for <10 short videos outlining key themes identified in the feedback literacy literature review. Advertise the opportunity to participate in research via focus group participation. 
  • Coordinate and facilitate focus groups and interviews with students. 
  • Analyse data collected and manage data in accordance with GDPR guidelines. 
  • Discuss data collection and analysis issues with the Research team.  
  • Adapt multimedia output, including AI-generated outputs, created based on focus group and interview feedback. 
  • Collaborate with the Academic Skills team when finalising the storyboards  
  • Work with King?s Digital to add resources to Academic Skills asynchronous resources and organise a second set of focus groups to beta test videos/resources. 
  • Present findings to the research team and key university stakeholders. 
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the team. 
  • Engage in training and professional development activities related to the project. 

The role is fractional (0.1 FTE, 4hours/week, December-July 2025). Hours of work will predominantly be scheduled remotely between Monday-Friday, 09.00-17.00 with some on campus meetings as needed and with prior agreement. There will be flexibility in how your hours are spread and you will be expected to manage your own workload depending on activity.

Audit & Evaluation of written assessment feedback for BSc midwifery students

Context of the post

We are looking to appoint a current registered Doctoral student at King's College London to work with a multidisciplinary team from the department of Midwifery and King?s Academy on a project funded by the College Education Fund looking to undertake an audit and evaluation of written assessment feedback for BSc Midwifery students. Looking at the student experience of assessment, this project will design an audit tool to undertake review of written assessment feedback given to students after summative assessment submission for students on the BSc Midwifery curriculum.

The project will focus on students where there has been evidence of an attainment gap in higher education (such as students from a minoritised ethnic group and those with  a SpLD) but will be of whole-cohort benefit. There will be 2 workstreams for the project;

  1. Literature review, and development of the audit tool as part of a codesign process with students and educators
  2. An audit of feedback on global assessment across the midwifery programme

Typical paid duties will include:

  • Assisting in building the evidence base for the project, by reviewing the literature on assessment feedback practices in higher education pre-registration healthcare programmes.
  • Writing up findings into a literature review

 Eligibility, hours and pay

To apply, you need to be a current registered Doctoral student at King's College London. 

We expect the role to run November 2024-Feb 2025, however there should be flexibility to allow for project needs to be met. Work is not expected to go beyond Feb 2025.

This post will be paid at a Band 5 salary on a weekly basis. It is anticipated that the hours will be on average 7-7.5 per week (some weeks may be slightly more, some less).

You will be hired on a King's Talent Bank hourly paid contract, and they will undertake a Right to Work check. You will need to ensure that taking on this role is not in breach of King's policies or any funding or immigration conditions.

Support provided

You will be expected to work autonomously, but will have support, including:

  • A project induction including from a member of the study team.
  • The Research Assistant will have one-to-one mentoring meetings with one of the project leads (depending on requirements of the work)

We are seeking a Technician to provide auxiliary room support for two research departments on the Guy s campus. A key element of the role is to manage laboratory waste and provide an autoclave and glass washing service to the scientists. The post is for 35 hours per week, available immediately and will be expected to end on 30th November with a possibility of extension.

The ideal candidate will have some experience of manual handling and operating machinery. Experience of working in a university or hospital setting would be an advantage but all training will be provided. We are looking for someone who is a good team player and would enjoy a role providing a service to others.

The research assistant will conduct statistical analysis with quantitative survey and administrative datasets, estimate regression models, conduct literature searches and reviews, work with geospatial maps, and prepare outputs in the form of tables, figures and presentation slides for a project titled ?Developing Youth Groups In Bangladesh To Support Peers At Risk Of Early Marriage?. This work will be carried out under the supervision of the project?s Principal Investigator.

Required experience/skills for this role include knowledge of, and experience working with, STATA and LaTeX.

Experience with Overleaf, geospatial software such as ArcGIS/QGIS, and ability to read and comprehend Bangla are desirable but not essential for the role.

The role-holder is also expected to have some PGT training in Economics, Statistics and Econometrics and prior research experience.
