Job Description

We are seeking a highly organised post graduate law candidate to support the development of a Refugee Family Reunion (RFR) project. This project is a new interdisciplinary partnership between King's Legal Clinic, King's Sanctuary Programme, DNA@King's and Refugee Legal Support (RLS).  

The successful candidate will support the coordination and administration of the RFR project which aims to:

  • set up a clinic which provides legal and DNA testing assistance to refugees in the UK, enabling them to safely unite with their family members.
  • produce research which challenges highly restrictive law and policy, paving the way for fair and compassionate safe pathways.

Experience & skills required  

The role requires a law graduate, educated to master's level,  with  demonstrable knowledge and interest in refugee law and  human rights law in a UK context. Project management experience, good written communication,  administrative skills  and  experience of working with diverse communities are also necessary.  DBS clearance will be needed and King's can arrange this where necessary.

Essential criteria  

  • Law graduate, educated to Masters level, or equivalent professional experience, and able to work with minimal supervision.  
  • Knowledge of English legal system, including refugee framework, UK immigration law, public law, Human Rights Act 1998 and European Convention on Human Rights.  
  • Experience of working in professional legal environment  and/or volunteering in University Clinic 
  • Demonstrable research and writing skills, including prior legal research experience and contributing to report writing.  
  •  Previous experience working with refugee communities.  
  • Excellent project management, administration and time management skills. 
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to communicate well with clients, clinic staff and all stakeholders. 
  •  Very competent in the use of IT and technology.  
  • Culturally competent, with a demonstrable commitment to equality of opportunity and inclusion.  

Availability to work on average 15 hours/2 days  per week (may be more in some weeks) to start by  w/c 1 September 2024 or 9 September at latest.  At least one day in person at King's Legal Clinic (Strand Campus)  

 Desirable criteria 

  • Lived experience of forced displacement and/or seeking family reunion.

The RA will be responsible to the Director at King's Legal Clinic and work collaboratively with the other project partners in developing and implementing the RFR project from approximately 2 September 2024 to  the end June 2025 (10 months) for  2 days a week (with the possibility of extending to 3 days subject to funding).    

Phase 1 (September- December 2024) involves organizing a stakeholder workshop  in October 2024  to identify the key issues impacting refugee family reunion in the UK  to formulate the focus of the pilot clinic and research outputs.  In Phase 2 ( Jan- June 2025), the  interdisciplinary pilot clinic involving RLS  working with King's students will be delivered and  two pieces of research will be completed which will be presented at a public event.  The RA main responsibilities will be  

  • Coordinating the workshop, including liaising with relevant stakeholders, minuting meetings, preparing materials for the workshop,  and supporting the delivery of the workshop. 
  • Preparing the first draft of the post workshop briefing note with the Sanctuary team and obtaining further feedback from stakeholders (surveys and interviews).  
  • Assist the Clinic Director,  RLS and other partners to develop  a pilot clinic framework and training materials for student volunteers.
  • Support in the delivery of student training , the administration of the Pilot clinic and some casework tasks.
  • Support  the Director to deliver reflection meetings with students and partners.
  • Assist in producing reports including reporting to funders, communications  and general administration as needed.
  • Ability to work on campus for at least one day a week, and more if needed.

The School of Politics & Economics will be recruiting Welcome Desk Assistants to help in the School Office for Welcome Week (16th September - 20th September 2024) and the first week of teaching (23rd September - 27th September 2024).  

This is a great opportunity to help welcome new and returning students at the start of the new term. Welcome Desk Assistants will staff the front desk of the School of Politics and Economics main office, Room 7.01 in Bush House North East Building. Throughout these weeks, the School Education Office will be attending academic and welcome inductions for students so you will be the first point of contact for student queries, helping with questions such as how to find timetables, access KEATS, signpost to wellbeing services or locate a room on campus.  

For more complex queries, you will take full details and contact information and pass on to the Programme teams for them to respond directly to the student. This is a fantastic opportunity to enhance your administration, communication, and support service skills as well as problem-solving, active listening and attentiveness.  

In-between queries, you will be asked to complete administrative tasks such as supporting us in designing a mentoring pilot scheme, reviewing and providing student perspectives on policies, testing submission forms and researching initiatives to support our careers offer.  

Welcome Desk Assistants will work in shifts, so we are looking for people who are available between 10-1PM or 1-4PM. Welcome Desk Assistants will be paid at a standard student rate of ?13.92 per hour.

The role 
We are recruiting for a Careers Engagement Assistant (CEA) to work closely with both the Marketing & Communications Officer and Assistant within the Student Careers Engagement team. This role will be marketing-focused but varied and offers the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of areas. 

The role holders are expected to work 10 hours per week and set working patterns will be agreed upon job offer (in accordance with role-holders availability). The role will be based at King?s Strand Campus (Bush House) and the role will be hybrid (a mix between in-person and remote). There may be occasions where role-holders are expected to travel to other King?s campuses.
