King's College London is seeking a motivated individual to join our team as a Part-time Policy and Project Officer focusing on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in the recruitment of postgraduate researcher (PGR) candidates. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to creating a more inclusive and diverse research culture within one of the world's leading institutions. An understanding of the lived experience of marginalised groups in higher education would be an advantage.



Responsibilities:




  1. Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and strategies to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion in the recruitment process for PhD candidates.

  2. Using data analysis tools to track and measure the impact of EDI initiatives

  3. Collaborate with academic and professional departments to assess and address barriers to diversity in the recruitment process.

  4. Conduct qualitative and quantitative research on best practices in EDI within higher education and contribute to the development of tailored solutions for King's College London.

  5. Liaise effectively with multiple King’s EDI projects to improve the overall research culture, fostering an inclusive environment.

  6. Provide support to staff involved in the careers service, academic departments, and professional services to help ensure a fair and inclusive approach.

  7. Contribute to the creation of accessible materials promoting PGR programmes

Qualifications

1) Data Analysis Skills:



Proficiency in data analysis tools to track and measure the impact of EDI initiatives (including use of Power BI and Excel).



Draw sound conclusions from a variety of data sources and communicate clearly.



2) Policy Analysis and Development:



Willingness to undertake equality impact assessments and other policy assessment tools.



Strong analytical skills, with the ability to critically evaluate policies and identify potential areas for enhancement.



3) Communication:



Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.



Ability to convey complex information in a clear and accessible manner.



Experience in developing communication strategies to promote diversity and inclusion initiatives.



4) Stakeholder Mapping:

5) Project Management:



Project management skills, with the ability to coordinate and implement EDI initiatives.



Strong organisational skills to manage and lead multiple projects simultaneously.



Monitor project timelines and deliverables.



6) Promotional Materials:



Contributing to creating engaging and inclusive promotional materials using tools such as video and Powerpoint.



7) Understanding of Higher Education Environment:



Knowledge of the higher education sector, particularly in relation to postgraduate researcher admissions and student recruitment.



Understanding of the challenges and opportunities in promoting diversity and inclusion in academia.



 

Overview:



Our research team is looking for Research Assistants to help deliver story-based surveys in primary schools next Spring. The project is investigating the impact that financial education has on primary aged children. At this stage, we need to take baseline measures of students’ financial understanding. To do this, we need a group of researchers to visit schools in pairs and deliver the survey to Reception aged students in a one-to-one setting. The schools are based in pockets around the country so travel will be required of every researcher that joins the team.



Tasks:



Once hired, researchers will be required to complete an enhanced (Disclosure and Barring Service) DBS check, so they are able to work in schools.



Researchers will then be required to attend a paid, in-person half day training session to become familiar with the survey tool they will use, to learn about safeguarding protocols and other ways of working, and to be provided with a laptop and other materials to use for fieldwork.



In pairs, researchers will travel to primary schools that are participating in our study. Once there, they will spend a day delivering surveys with Reception aged (4 and 5 years old) children in a one-to-one setting. The surveys take the form of a short story and a card-sorting game. As researchers talk through the story, they will pause to ask the children questions which they will then record on a laptop.



Researchers will be expected to stay overnight to visit an additional school(s) the following day, or to return to the same school if there are lots of students. Travel, accommodation and expenses will be paid.



When surveys are completed, researchers will have to share the completed digital survey responses with the research team.



Hours:



14 hours (2 days) a week for 6 weeks, with the possibility to work more hours.



+ 4 hours (1/2 day) training in person (in London) before fieldwork begins.



When:



19th February 2024 – 28th March 2024.



To be considered, you would need to be available for (at least) 2 days a week during this period.



There is potential for some contracts to be extended after the Easter break into April if we are unable to complete all data collection in this six-week period.



Where:



The schools are based in London, Lowestoft, Bristol, Cardiff, Newcastle, County Durham, the Scottish Borders, and Edinburgh.

The African Leadership Centre, Department of War Studies, and the Political Economy Department at KCL are recruiting for three Research Assistants to support the delivery of the project ‘The Politics of National Energy Transitions:  Sites of Contestation, Compliance, and Disregard for Global Climate Action’.



The global transition towards clean and affordable energy is crucial to achieve net zero carbon emissions (cf. SDG7, 13). While the IPCC and the UN continue to highlight the urgency of decarbonisation, few countries are reflecting this urgency in realizing their net zero plans and most continue to rely on fossil fuels. This is true even for countries that have national energy transition (NET) frameworks to operationalise the Paris Agreement and SDG7. NETs simultaneously capture ‘lofty’ ambitions for transformation and represent sites of contestation and wider geopolitical tensions. As important but understudied components of the emerging energy governance regime, our project is analysing NETs politics across diverse national contexts.  Our central question is: What are the drivers and motivations shaping NETs globally, and to what extent do those factors influence effective implementation of NETs? 



Methodologically, the research adopts a case study approach to sample three countries in each of the three scenarios/approaches that constitute the analytical framework of the project.



The RAs will be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers, based at King’s College London. RAs will support with research, the development of the analytical framework, and the writing up of the case studies. Case studies will include Barbados, Chile, Denmark, Ghana, New Zealand, Nigeria, Philippines, UAE, and the UK. Knowledge of any of these case studies is desirable, but not essential.



This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract starting 1st March 2024 until 14th January 2024. The case study research should be completed by 1st June 2024, but there may be scope for travel, further interviews etc. until the end of the project in January 2024. The work should be completed over 25 days at a rate of GBP33.84 per hour for 8-hour days.



Interviews for this post will take place in the week commencing 19th February 2024.



Qualifications

MA or PhD in a relevant field



One RA should be proficient in the Arabic language.

  • Experience with developing literature reviews

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Contribute to the dissemination of research findings via conferences, seminars, practitioner workshops and other presentations, as needed.

  • Assist the PI with aspects of the project management and administration.

  • Good project management skills.

  • Ability to work individually and as part of an interdisciplinary team.



Desirable:




  • Experience working in the fields of climate change, energy transitions or international sustainable development

  • Experience working with literatures in political economy, African politics or international relations

  • Experience working in or on any of the country case studies
