SHC Front of House Support (weekend cover)
4-10hrs/week at ?12/hr

Job Role

To be the first point of contact for academic & research staff, students, members of the public and other visitors to the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen?s. 

To provide general information on the programmes and activities of the Centre, directing enquiries, and supporting the smooth running of internal and external events and group visits. 

Based at the reception desk of the Seamus Heaney Centre, this is primarily a weekend role and applicants should be available to work at least one weekend day per week. Additional hours may be offered during core opening hours (Tue-Sun, 10.00-4.00, with some evening events). 



Qualifications

Degree or currently enrolled in an English degree (or closely related)



Skills

Key Duties:

  • Welcoming and directing visitors within the building and the wider campus. 
  • Daily maintenance and security of the front of house area (SHC gallery, reception and shop), including sales, gallery information, and inspections of public areas. 
  • Deal with routine enquiries from students, staff and visitors and provide them with the relevant information or refer more complex enquiries to the appropriate member of staff.
  • Updating database of audience data, visitor numbers and contacts.
  • Helping with technical set up for events, troubleshooting and logging calls with Information Services or Estates where appropriate.
  • Helping with room setup and hospitality for special events.

Student Mooting Officer

The Student Mooting Officer will work alongside the Mooting Co-Ordinator, the Student Law Society Mooting Officer and others on the Mooting Team in helping to run the mooting programme during the academic year and in contributing to the future development of this programme.

The post will require a commitment of a total of 100 hours over the current academic year for which the post holder will receive a payment of ?12.00 per hour.

Background to the Programme

The QUB School of Law Mooting Programme involves undergraduate and postgraduate law students in the exercise of arguing disputed points of law against an opposing counsel and before a judge. It is perhaps the closest experience that a student can have whilst at university to appearing in court.  Mooting involves a number of skills, including legal research, the drafting of written arguments, and oral presentation.  In recent years, teams from the School have performed with distinction in external mooting competitions, and we also have a raft of competitive and training activities within the School.  Our overall aims are to develop students? skills in legal research and legal argument and to maintain and build up the reputation of the School in mooting skills.

 

Responsibilities

  1. To assist in the organisation of training and support sessions for student participants on the programme.
  2. To assist in co-ordinating the development of internal and external events associated with the programme.
  3. To assist in managing the administration of the programme in conjunction with the Mooting Co-ordinator.
  4. To manage the programme?s online presence, including social media.
  5. To liaise with the Research Advocates in publicising mooting activities.
  6. To assist in the development of other advocacy related activities such as mock trials.

Qualifications
  • Registered students at Queen?s University Belfast for academic year 2024 ? 2025 and for the full period that these posts are available, graduates will also be eligible.
