Job Description
This position involves working as a Programme Assistant for the MA Applied Linguistics & ELT for one day a week for a period of six weeks. The assistant will work directly with the MA Programme Director Dr Martin Dewey, alongside two other Programme Assistants supporting the BA English Language Linguistics and International Child Rights and Development.
Key Responsibilities
The primary duties of the Programme Assistant include:
Investigating presence and reputation of MA AL & ELT on social media platforms in China (WeChat).
Developing, distributing and analysing a short online survey to current students and graduates of the MA AL & ELT to understand more about how they found about the and why they chose to enrol on the programme (8 hours).
Developing, organising and analysing a small focus group with current and past students from the MA AL & ELT to explore the issues raised in the survey in more detail, including how students experience the current webpages and student hubs that provide key information about the programme (7 hours).
Summary report of findings from the WeChat investigation, the survey and the focus group with key recommendations (5 hours).
Work with programme director, ECS comms lead and ECS marketing lead to enact some of these recommendations (i.e. could potentially support writing pieces for the websites or social media, or support writing a justification for funding for new videos made of the programme, or advising how the student hubs could be developed etc) (15 hours).
The Programme Assistant will receive comprehensive training and mentoring to successfully carry out these responsibilities (7 hours).
Work Arrangement
This is a hybrid position, allowing the assistant to complete most tasks remotely. However, some on-campus meetings and responsibilities will be required.
QualificationsCurrent or previous student on the MA AL & ELT
SkillsEssential:
Competent speaker of Chinese
Familiarity and ability to use Microsoft packages (e.g., good Excel command)
Current post graduate student on the MA AL & ELT
Experience writing up reports
Good organisational skills
Good communication skills
Good teamwork skills
Desirable:
Experience in using online survey software
Experience in developing and running focus groups
Interest in marketing and communication
Experience with descriptive statistic
