Sustainable Research Assistant

Job Description

We're seeking a passionate and detail-oriented Sustainable Research Assistant to join King's Sustainable Research Team (SRT) and help drive real change across our research community. 

Labs consume 3 to 10 times more energy per square foot than offices, and biological and medical research is a major contributor to global plastic waste. That's where you come in. 

At King's, we're tackling these challenges head-on by rolling out the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) across all our wet labs. LEAF provides a roadmap for labs to become more sustainable, with actionable steps ranked from Bronze to Gold based on impact. In this role, you'll support labs in implementing and auditing LEAF criteria, offering hands-on guidance to help them improve their environmental performance. 

You'll also play a key part in a variety of other sustainable research initiatives, helping to embed greener practices into the heart of scientific discovery. If you're ready to be a catalyst for change in one of the world's leading research institutions, we'd love to hear from you. 

Responsibilities: 

Travelling to labs as and when needed to deliver or pick up resources 

Get involved in planning and executing exciting events, your organizational skills will help make them a success. 

LEAF Auditing Training: Receive hands-on training in sustainable lab practices 

Participate and provide SRT support for peer auditing process across all labs 

Support cold storage optimisation with the freezer challenge campaign 

Supporting on any other projects as required 



Qualifications

An undergraduate degree in a wet laboratory-based science.



Skills

Knowledge   

Essential: wet laboratory skills including understanding of contamination and waste, cold storage. 

Desirable: Knowledge of sustainable science or the LEAF programme, including knowledge of using resources efficiently including equipment and consumables, water and energy use.     

 

Experience   

Essential: experience of working in a wet-lab. 

Desirable: Experience implementing the LEAF programme.   

 

Skills   

Essential: Able to use their initiative and work independently.  

Essential: Able to move to Guy's and Denmark Hill campuses.    

Desirable: Previous experience doing LEAF auditing.  

 

Other Attributes 

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 

Good communication skills

Main purpose of the job: 

 

To provide support to the examination process. 

 

Main Duties: 

 

To support the Head Invigilator/ Examination Team with the day-to-day operation of examination venues. This may include (but not limited to): 

 

assisting with setting up examination venues by laying out stationery, equipment and examination papers in accordance with the outlined procedures; 

assisting candidates prior to the start of examination by directing them to their seats and advising them about possessions permitted in examination venues;  

offering advice and guidance to unregistered candidates without allocated seats; 

ensuring that candidates do not talk once inside the examination venue; 

invigilating during examinations, dealing with queries raised by candidates and dealing with examination irregularities in accordance with strict procedures; 

checking attendance during examinations; 

recording details for early leavers and collect their scripts; 

escorting candidates from the examination venue during the examinations as required, and supervising candidates whilst outside the examination venue; 

collecting and collating scripts at the end of the examination in accordance with strict procedures; 

assisting with the preparation of script envelopes; 

supervising candidates leaving the examination venues, ensuring that candidates do not remove equipment or stationery from the venue without authorisation and ensuring that candidates leave in an orderly and quiet manner;

packing of examination papers, stationery and equipment prior to the examinations and the delivery to and from venues as appropriate; 

preparation of seating plans; 

delivering scrips to departmental and school offices.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Tissue Bank Technician to provide technical support to the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund Tissue Bank (PCRFTB), to enable comprehensive, efficient and effective service to internal and external researchers. In particular, sample processing, quality control, management of PCRFTB samples, general house-keeping and stock taking. 

This is a full time position for a duration of 3 months. We will be paying the successful candidate between ?17.97 - ?21.62 per hour plus holiday pay depending on experience. 

 



Qualifications

First Degree in biological sciences

Minimum of 2 A Levels in relevant subjects (e.g. Biology, Chemistry)



Skills
Working knowledge of Health and Safety, COSHH and GCP regulations and an understanding of the implications of compliance with the Human Tissue Act (HTA)
Knowledge of laboratory health and safety procedures
Experience in handling and processing human tissue in an oncology research environment
Experience of sample archiving and management using LIMS
Experience of managing databases to identify sample cohorts
Experience in nucleic acid extraction
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
Ability to follow written and oral instructions
Ability to organise own workload and respond to changing priorities
Experience of using Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint) 
Ability to work both independently and as a supportive member of a team
Excellent written and verbal communication
