Student Helper

£21,255 - £21,255

Job Description

The Student StreetLaw Co-ordinator will work to plan and co-ordinate the StreetLaw programme during the academic year of 2023/24.

The post will require a commitment of a total of 100 hours, over the academic year for which the post holder will receive a payment of £10.90 per hour

Interested applicants should submit a CV and a cover letter to m.vincent@qub.ac.uk by 11.59PM on Monday 16th October. Interviews will take place in the week commencing Monday 23rd October.

Please note this post is only available to LLM candidates in the School of Law with a law degree.

Background to the Programme

StreetLaw is undertaken by 2nd and 3rd year undergraduate students. Approximately 10 – 20 students are selected to participate each year, and it is an opportunity for students to research and develop their legal knowledge in a practical and meaningful way for the benefit of the local community. Students do not provide pro-bono legal advice, rather a public legal education. A particular legal issue is identified as of concern to given section of the community, and then students apply their existing legal knowledge; conduct further research; and design materials that will enable them to provide an engaging output designed to educate them as to their legal rights.

Recent StreetLaw projects have, for example, educated school students on the risks of using smartphone technology in terms of their exposure to the risk of online harm (highlighting legal risks such as personal data protection, and online grooming); prisoners on their legal rights in prison; and young entrepreneurs on the implications of commercial contracts. This year we are seeking a local school as a collaborative partner with a view to delivering an engaging co-curricular event (such as a workshop session comprising activities). Ideally, this would take place prior to the main exam season in the late spring/early summer, with planning and preparation towards it taking place in consultation with the school during the autumn/winter term. Students will be recruited onto the StreetLaw programme at QUB in November this year.
