STUDENT ASSISTANTS



THE MCCLAY LIBRARY



The Queen’s University McClay Library requires 1 Postgraduate Research student to provide assistance in Special Collections and Archives. The post is available from 10 April 2024 until 31 July 2024 in the first instance. This is subject to registration with the University for the Academic Year 2023/2024, a continuing right to work check in the UK and availability for the full period of this post; working five to fifteen hours maximum per week. 



In addition to the above post, there may also be opportunities for temporary hours in the Library Faculty team at The McClay Library and sometimes at other branches of Library Services – anyone who would like to be considered for such opportunities as they arise is welcome to submit an application.



Brief outline of the duties



To support frontline service in the day-to-day delivery of library services at Special Collections & Archives (retrieving and re-shelving materials from closed access; assisting with queries in an effective and prompt manner); participate in manuscript transcription projects and assisting with reference queries; draft calendars and box lists with supporting registers (biographical, place) for selected manuscript collections to facilitate improved access and research support for SCA materials; must be able to work independently and as part of a team.



Main duties associated with these posts are:




  • Providing research assistance for manuscript transcription projects and assisting with research queries;

  • Drafting box lists and supporting registers (biographical, place) for selected manuscript collections to facilitate improved access and research support for SCA materials;




  • Providing support at the Special Collections and Archives service point and undertaking associated clerical tasks;

  • Retrieving and re-shelving material from closed access storage;

  • Providing excellent customer service to library-users and assisting with queries in an effective and prompt manner;

  • Scanning and administrative tasks associated with copying and supply of theses for overseas requests service

  • Take forward assignments independently and as part of a team;

  • Carry out any other duties which are appropriate to the post as may be reasonably requested by Supervisor.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria:




  • Registered postgraduate research students at Queen’s University Belfast for academic year 2023 – 2024 and for the full period that these posts are available, otherwise the application will not be considered.

  • All students for whom English is not their first language must have achieved a minimum pass mark of 7.0 in the writing and speaking band of IELTS (International English Language Test Score) or equivalent

  • Postgraduate student following a course of study in History, International Studies, English, Music, Irish, Politics, Law;



Desirable criteria:




  • Research experience with archives or special collections;

  • Experience of working on collaborative team projects;

  • Administrative or clerical experience.

The requirements of these posts are that applicants must be currently registered and attending a course at Queen's University, Belfast for academic year 2023 - 2024.  Students applying for these posts MUST be able to evidence in writing how they meet the essential and desirable criteria outlined below.  Students who DO NOT provide evidence will not be shortlisted and the application will not be considered.

Based on the nature of the work required applicants must be able to:




  • Use, and be comfortable with, working at height from library step ladders;

  • Carry up to a maximum weight of 10 kgs  at shoulder height or 25 kgs at waist height;

  • Must be available to work some evenings and weekends.

Queen’s University seek to recruit a number of Activity Leaders to deliver safe, progressive and enjoyable activities to children of all ages and abilities in the Queen’s Sport Summer Activity Scheme.  You will assist the Co-ordinator and Team Leaders in planning and implementing a programme of activities that will include teaching/coaching a variety of sporting and non-sporting activities. 



You will assist in the supervision and safeguarding of children participating in the scheme, overseeing the general safety and behaviour. You will be provided with training prior to the scheme starting and the role will involve an element of manual handling, assembling and dismantling the equipment as required for use in activities. 



You will be customer orientated with good communication skills and you will have the ability to use initiative and work unaccompanied.  This is a full-time position from 24 June – 16 August 2024 (inclusive to staff training) and successful candidates will be expected to have availability throughout this period. The post meets the definition of regulated activity and requires an enhanced disclosure check and references.



The Summer Scheme at Queen’s Sport is a popular programme that offers children aged 6 - 14 years old a high-quality activity experience. Children can learn new skills that promote an active lifestyle by providing opportunities to try new sports in a fun and supportive environment. You will also be supervising and safeguarding our Junior Leader Programme which is for 15-17 year olds.

JOB PURPOSE:



 Assist the Co-ordinator and Team Leaders as required in planning and implementing a programme of activities that will include teaching/coaching a variety of sporting and non-sporting activities.



MAIN ACTIVITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:



Assist the Co-ordinator and Team Leaders as required in planning and implementing a programme of activities that will include



Assist in the supervision and safeguarding of the children participating in the scheme, overseeing the general safety and behaviour of the children and directing activities to prevent injury, misuse and damages to facilities or equipment.



Assemble and dismantle the equipment as required for use in activities.



To carry out duties in a way as to enhance and protect the reputation and profile of the Queen’s Sport.



Any other relevant duties as may be required for the period of the summer scheme.



PLANNING AND ORGANISING:



Assist with planning and organising a weekly programme of sporting and non-sporting activity for 7 weeks.



Plan and organise coaching / instructional sessions on a daily basis.



RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES (e.g. People, Finance, Equipment):



Ensure the safety and well-being of children through the delivery of an enjoyable programme of sporting and non-sporting activity.



Responsible for set-up and take down of equipment required for programme delivery.



INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:



Liaise with parents on a daily basis.



Communicate / work effectively with Queen’s Sport staff on a regular basis.



Qualifications

ESSENTIAL



A minimum of 3 GCSEs (Grade C or above) or equivalent, including English Language and a mathematical based subject plus a teaching or coaching qualification in sport(s), physical education, or arts and crafts.



DESIRABLE



Qualified Primary School Teacher.



Level 1 National Governing Body Coaching Award.



Current First Aid qualification.



Safeguarding in Sport Qualification 



Skills

Recent relevant experience of teaching or coaching children (paid or voluntary) on a part time basis for a minimum of 6 months OR 3 months experience of teaching children in a structured environment on a full time basis. Note that those whose experience is gained as part of a teaching qualification must demonstrate a minimum of 3 months i.e. 12 weeks experience within a classroom.



DESIRABLE



Cleaning experience.



Experience in teaching/coaching swimming, rugby, Gaelic games, soccer, basketball, dance, netball, hockey or other sports activities.



Recent experience of working as an activity leader at a Summer Activity Scheme.



Recent experience of implementing safe sporting and non-sporting activities to young people following health & safety and safeguarding guidelines within an education and/or sporting context.

Responsible for delivering a high-level, comprehensive and professional PA and administrative service to support the work of the Director/CEO.The post holder will work pro-actively and collaboratively with other members of the team, the broader University and senior level internal and external stakeholders (eg. VC’s Office, Local Authority Leadership teams, investors and company CEOs).



 




  1. Provide confidential and effective PA and administrative support to the Director/CEO, including theorganisation and coordination of senior management activities, e.g. meetings, briefings, travel, and minute taking.

  2. Manage the Director/CEO’s complex diary, prioritising the many conflicting pressures and ensuring all necessary documentation and briefing information is available in advance of meetings, liaising with colleagues within the team,and relevant project teams, across the University and with external stakeholders as appropriate

  3. Draft, amend and distribute reports, memos and contracts. Ensuring that papers, documents and other relevantinformation are available to staff.

  4. Provide committee administrative support for working groups and meetings chaired by senior University personnel as required. Attend and service meetings as requested by the Director/CEO: preparing agendas, collating meeting papers, taking minutes, and handling follow-up correspondence.

  5. Communicate with key contacts from within the University and external organisations in order to develop excellent working relationships.

  6. Support office management, ensuring office supplies and office upkeep are of a high quality

The financial losses in UK online banking due to fraud annually amount to almost 2 billion pounds. With the losses in online trading due to fake accounts, stolen credentials and information leaks the figure becomes truly astronomical. The design of security solutions requires complex expertise - understanding of the processes within transactional systems under threat, knowledge of potential adversaries and their malicious behaviour, justified choice of suitable tools for detection, neutralization and prevention, and their proper configuration. The need for software for modelling the security infrastructure, estimating the security risks and analyzing the impact of the solutions on security is extremely high due to the complexity of the task and the impossibility of demonstrating the solutions experimentally. this role is for the development of a desktop software application that:




  • Model transactions under security threats.

  • Design of security architecture and behaviour analysis through simulated transactions

  • Calculate the security risks based on parameters of security analytics.

  • Determination of the impact of security infrastructure on risks     



 



The ideal candidate for the AI/Software Engineer position is a current/graduated AI/Software Engineering PG student who will assist in the market research, analysis and implementation of software (Reinforcement Learning and Visualization algorithms for solving risk assessment tasks under security threats). strong AI and programming skills are required.



A mixed background that combines knowledge from various areas, such as AI, Machine Learning (ML), data science, and software engineering, as well as a deep understanding of the cyber security domain, is highly advantageous.
