Job Description

This role will involve co-ordination of the initial stages of a Languages mentoring programme, between May and July/August 2024 (12 weeks). The programme will be rolled out in 2024-2025 and will be led by Languages at Queen’s, in collaboration with NICILT. This is a research impact programme, aimed at supporting year 12 students of Languages in schools in NI, primarily through mentoring but also through talks and a taster event at Queen’s, such that those with an interest in taking a language at A level feel confident and empowered to take a positive decision. The mentors will be final-year languages students at Queen’s.



The 12-week internship will involve 140 hours of work, working with staff and students in Languages, and with NICILT, to undertake the following:




  • Coordination of the recruitment of mentors

  • Working with Queen’s to organise Access NI checks

  • Coordination of the recruitment of participating schools

  • Liaising with the selected schools to ensure all paperwork is completed by late June

  • Completing a first draft of the baseline questionnaires for pupils and for teachers

  • Planning the training session for mentors



Qualifications

Criteria



Essential



A completed degree including French, Irish or Spanish.



Ability to use Microsoft programmes such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint.



Experience in questionnaire design and basic quantitative analysis.



Experience of working as part of a team (in any field).



Demonstrable organisational skills (in any field).



 



Desirable



An understanding of the CCEA GCSE curriculum in French, Irish or Spanish.



Experience in teaching or tutoring at GCSE or A level.



A period of residence working or studying abroad or in the Gaeltacht.



Experience of working with young people under 18.

Student Registry team are looking for student helpers to assist with Summer Graduation 2024. 



Have you got good communication skills? Are you conscientious and able to work well in a team? Then there may be an opportunity for you to perform a very important role in supporting the University’s Summer Graduation 2024. 



These posts are expected to be available from Friday 21 June to Thursday 4 July.



Various duties to include - assisting in preparation of graduation brochures/parchments, preparation of the graduation hall, assisting guests and graduands on the day, and other tasks as identified by Student Registry Leads. Working hours will be from 8am - 4pm, unless otherwise specified, during the graduation period. 



It is a requirement of this post that applicants are currently registered and attending a course at Queen's University Belfast for the academic year 2023/24 and for the full period this post is available, otherwise the application will not be considered. 



Applicants must be available for a minimum of 20 hours during each week of the post. 



Where applications exceed the required number, appointment for this position will be by random selection.

Languages at Queen’s, in collaboration with NICILT, will be running a mentoring scheme between September 2024 and January 2025 for school pupils in year 12. The aims of the scheme will be to support GCSE pupils in French, Irish or Spanish; to help them build oral skills; to support them with areas of language learning that they find challenging; to enthuse them about language learning; to build confidence such that those who might consider taking a language at A level feel empowered to make a positive decision. Mentors will act as ‘role models and ambassadors’ to programme participants, providing potential students with an enthusiastic insight into life as a languages student at Queen’s, including the experience of studying/working abroad or in the Gaeltacht.     



 



The mentoring will be ‘one-on-two’ (one mentor to two pupils). Mentors will receive training, including in relation to the Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Groups Act. They will also give talks to cohorts of pupils in the school and will help with a taster day for Languages at Queen’s. Materials for mentoring and for the talks will be provided. This will involve a total of around 12.5 hours work.  Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

Research Assistants for Politics and Public Policy Project



Project Description: I'm seeking 4 research assistants to assist in compiling a cross-country sample of civil society organisations and firms engaged in lobbying across Europe. The project investigates the resilience of civil society organisations in times of crisis in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and the EU through eliter surveys, interviews and focus groups with organisational leaders. 



Tasks: Research assistants will be responsible for conducting and documenting web searches of organisations, as well as collecting contact details of organisational leaders in the above countries. This includes collecting and organising information about organisations in live Excel spreadsheets and codebooks.



Expected Commitment: Approximately total of 60 hours over maximum of 8 weeks. Remote work is possible. Regular in-person or virtual meetings.



Qualifications

  • Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in politics or in a related social science and humanities discipline.



Desirable:




  • Be enrolled in (or have completed) a MA or PhD in politics or in a related social science and humanities discipline
